As the story goes:

For centuries people had been looking up at the sky and wondering what the little twinkle was, and for centuries the answer had been “a star,” which is a very comfortable answer to give a child at bedtime.

Then one night a astronomer in Arizona pointed her telescope at a twinkle that was not behaving like a star, because stars do not get bigger every night, and she checked the numbers twice and then a third time with a coffee in her hand that she was no longer drinking.

The little asteroid, for its part, had been in no hurry for four billion years and saw no reason to start now.

Nobody knows how the song ends, but the nursery rhyme has been quietly updated, and the part about being up above the world so high has never sounded the same.
